Record #221: Frank Sinatra – The Voice (1955)

Before he was the world famous crooner Frank Sinatra, he was just Frank Sinatra, crooner. And in this ‘55 compilation of early singles, he sounds just as naive as he looks on the cover.

His tried-and-true sure footedness that afforded him the freedom to scat and ad lib through arrangements in his later days are absent. Rather, he plays it straight, singing with a youthful confidence and a joi de vivre that would later be strangled by the pomp and swagger of his Rat Pack days. It’s still the same old Frank Sinatra, but he’s not letting it get to his head because, well…being Frank Sinatra didn’t mean anything back then. He was just another young buck trying to make it. And he did it his way.
