Record #219: Crosby, Stills, & Nash – Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969)

It is my understanding that super groups aren’t always as successful as CSN (and sometimes Y). Which is surprising, considering that the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and The Hollies don’t really traffic in the same sorts of rock.

But when they come together, you’d be forgiven for thinking there was only one singer who had mastered singing multiple notes at a time. Every aspect of every song fits perfectly within the concave of its surrounding elements, creating ten folk rock songs that are as airtight as you can get. The three voice harmonies are effortlessly etherial, floating above the chiming guitars and urgent bass (that thing just never stops). Somehow, the reverse guitar on Pre-Road Downs isn’t out of place on this gentle, exuberant folk rock album. It’s a shame that it took me this long to add it to my collection.
