Record #216: Duke Ellington and his Orchestra – Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

I thought I knew what swank was before this day.

I did not.

The soundtrack for Anatomy of a Murder (which is totally a movie I want to see now) finds the Duke and Co. in top form–the solos are exciting, the band is tight, and the soul pouring out of them is so thick you can see it. And as a soundtrack, it’s incredibly evocative. I haven’t even seen the movie but I can see scenes in my head pairing themselves off with each piece–a dame slinks into a P.I.’s office late at night and lights her cigarette off of his own as it hangs in his lip. He throws on his fedora and overcoat and hits the beat looking for clues. A car chase. A bar fight. A sigh. This is pure Old Hollywood, and no one does it better than the Duke.
