Record #67: Bonnie Tyler – Faster Than The Speed Of Night (1983)

I don’t know what exactly it is about 80s female-led pop-rock that makes me love it so much. It has all the telltale production–gated drums, chorused bass, metal tinted lead guitar lines everywhere, piano arpeggios–as well as voices bigger than the hair they wore.

Bonnie Tyler doesn’t offer much that Pat Benetar doesn’t, but she’s just as synonymous with the OTT performances of the 1980s. The obvious standout is the comically brilliant Total Eclipse of the Heart. It so perfectly captures the surreal nonsense and dramatic flair of the decade (apparently, the song was written for Meatloaf. The mind races).

The rest of the album is composed of covers (including John Fogerty’s Have You Ever Seen the Rain) and songs floating around from different pop writers. It’s nothing too spectacular, but it’s a fun listen nonetheless. And sometimes, all you want is fun, even if it is with a generous helping of melodrama.
