As a guitarist, I think it’s a little funny that the cover of this album depicts Eric Clapton, one of the most lauded guitarists of all time, playing a G chord, the first chord everyone learns.
But whatever.
Eric Clapton is rightly lauded as a guitarist. As a singer or songwriter however, he’s a little inconsistent. Excepting Cocaine, Wonderful Tonight, and Lay Down Sally (which are themselves a little mediocre) most of the songs on this album are unimpressive and forgettable. Its listenability is only saved by Clapton’s playing, which isn’t quite enough to save its shelf space in my collection. Sorry Clapton–we’ll always have Cream.
