Record #313: Explosions in the Sky – Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever

those who tell the truth shall die
In terms of climax-chasing, bombastic post rock, Explosions in the Sky are the poster boys. While “cinematic” gets thrown around a lot with post rock, EitS actually make soundtracks.
And it’s no wonder–their ability to conjure raw emotion is among the very best in the game. Those Who Tell the Truth…, only their second album, is a bit rawer than their later, more soundtrack ready releases. There’s more overt noise here than All of the Sudden… or Take Care (x3), and the album spends less time intricately stacking layers upon layers of sound as it does erecting cities with a word and destroying it the next.
And despite all of its unrefinedness, it’s perhaps more effective than their slicker, more carefully composed work, in the same way the Ramones were more effective than Emerson Lake and Palmer (although obviously not as great a difference).
